Don Barber kicks off senate campaign

By: Allison Lazarz

TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Don Barber for Senate campaign kicked off Saturday. Barber announced his candidacy in each county of the 51st district.

A bus full of supporters toured the district with Barber, working their way to his home town of Caroline.

Barber is trying to unseat republican senator Jim Seward.

He said his motivation for wanting to get involved with state government stems from his upbringing.

"The economy in upstate New York and the social structure is really changing from when I was a child. I grew up next to my grandparents and all my cousins and I would get together each Sunday for a meal and now all my children live away. So we need some major changes and that's why I'm running for Senate. Because I want my children to live near me and I want my friends to come back," said Barber.

Barber is currently the town supervisor in Caroline.
