Simulator offers driving challenges

By: Web Staff

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- New York State Police, Onondaga County Deputy Sheriffs and other county employees were able to test drive a virtual reality simulator known as Drive Square.

Those behind the wheel put on virtual glasses and drove different scenarios. It's the latest technology to help law enforcement and county employees to drive better.

The Onondaga County Traffic and Safety Advisory Board is looking to see if the simulator can be incorporated in area training.

"It's unbelievable how real the steering feels and the line of sight that you're getting and the traffic and the activities that are happening around you as you're driving down the highway," said Onondaga County employee James Stelter.

The simulator can also show the driver how difficult it can be to handle a car if the driver has been drinking. This makes the unit ideal for teens just learning to drive.
