Stray bullet goes through child's mattress
MARSHALL, N.Y. -- Nine-month-old Josh Knapp is all smiles as he walks across what is now his old mattress. Saturday morning his parents heard what sounded like drawers slamming. What they discovered in his room nothing to smile about.
"We went upstairs and we noticed a hole in our son's mattress, right through his crib. We still didn't know what happened and we kept looking around we see some debris on the floor and we looked in the wall and noticed a hole in the wall. When we saw a hole in the wall that's when we realized it was a bullet," said Josh's mother Rachel Knapp.
Luckily, Josh wasn't in the room when that bullet came through.
"Josh woke up at about 7 o'clock and my husband went in to get him out and 15 minutes later the bullet went through his mattress," Knapp.

Police say that bullet came from hunter Gene Whipple's rifle. He was charged with reckless endangerment and will appear in court next week. This weekend marked the close of hunting season. New York State Police Captain Frances Coots says hunters need to be aware of their surroundings.
"The bullet has no conscience. It's going to continue going until it hits something or runs out of energy. In this case it did hit that house and the person that fired the weapon he needs to know that there's a certain responsibility when you're hunting," said Coots.
An old changing table stopped the bullet. But what's even scarier for this family, on the other side of the wall their 2-year-old son was sleeping.
"I knew Josh was safe and so my next thought was Jake across the hall. I just immediately ran over to get him because his crib was in line also and he was still sleeping in his bed, but luckily the changing table had stopped the bullet otherwise it would have gone into his room," said Knapp.
It didn't and the Knapp's say they're just happy that everyone was safe.
There have been other incidents like this during the hunting season. The Oneida County Sheriff says on Saturday a bullet also went through a home in Oneida Castle. No one was injured. And last month, a Swan Lake family wasn't so lucky. A stray bullet from a hunter killed their 18-month-old.
