Big Flats soldier laid to rest
BIG FLATS, N.Y. -- Dozens of people came out to say goodbye to Private Justin Hartford at Woodlawn National Cemetery. The crowd was filled with those who knew and loved the Big Flats soldier and others who just wanted to show their gratitude for his service.
"I have a real high respect for soldiers and veterans and we appreciate everything they've done for us and I just wanted to come and pay my respects," said Elmira resident Carol Austin.
It was a very difficult day for Private Hartford's family and friends, who shared stories and memories of what they'll miss the most about their young hero.
"Everything, his smile, his voice, just seeing him," said Lila Hartford, an aunt to Justin Hartford.

"Joked a lot," said aunt Laura Hartford.
"He joked all the time. He was a jokester," Lila Hartford said.
"Loved fishing, hunting. I heard a story from his sister about putting crabs in the bathtub that he was going to use for fishing," said family friend Donna Dacey.
Hartford was killed in non-combat incident in Iraq that is still under investigation. And although his loved ones have said their goodbyes, they won't be able to move on until they know the details surrounding his death.
"In this case, it is still under investigation, as previously reported. This doesn't bring closure to the entire death for the family. That's the most difficult part is not really being able to bring closure," said Army Chief of Ordnace Lynn Collyar.
"I think that will make them feel better. They're willing to accept whatever they hear, but not hearing anything is bothering them tremendously," Dacey said.
And although it's hard to let him go, Private Hartford's family knows he had a good time while he was here.
"As the minister said, he enjoyed life and he did. And he lived it his way," Dacey said.
Army representatives say Private Hartford's cause of death should be released within the next few weeks.
Private Hartford's family says they want to thank the community for its support during this tough time.
