ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Some employees at the Elmira Post Office processing center could lose their jobs within the next two months.

Twenty-six clerks and nine mail handlers at the Sullivan Street center got the 60-day notice Thursday. The post office has a no-layoff policy, so if the employees decide to stay with the company, they can, but would have to move to a new location and take a different position.

A representative from the postal service tells us the affected employees will be offered relocation pay if they do move. They say this is a cost saving measure and will save a substantial amount of money by consolidating the services to a plant in Rochester.

Union representatives met with the Postal Service last month about making changes at the facility. They say they've requested information on the cost-saving measure at the facility, but have yet to receive it.
