Groups upset over portrayal of mentally disabled in new film
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- In the new movie Tropic Thunder Ben Stiller plays an actor famous for his role as a mentally disabled person. But various groups throughout the country say his portrayal is offensive.
One of those groups is the ARC of Onondaga, an organization that works with the mentally challenged. The organization believes the movie's depictions are negative. It also is saying that language used to describe the mentally disabled is tasteless.
The organization is encouraging Central New Yorkers not to see the movie.

"We think it's best that our community really spend its time and our resources to learn about the contributions of people with developmental disabilities. That's the best use of our time as a community," said Stanfort Perry with the ARC.
A DreamWorks spokesman has said no changes or cuts to the film will be made.
