Small store merchants encourage local holiday shopping
ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- Local stores in the North Country are ready for holiday shoppers. Places like the TAUNY Folk Store hope to attract customers with items they say are more than just average gifts.
"I have a 91-year-old rug maker. Her story is part of her artwork and people like that story. They want to buy not just something, but something that has a meaning to it," said Jody Tosti, store manager of the TAUNY Folk Store in Canton.
Customers say they like the smaller stores because they find items with local charm.
"In many of our shops you get unique items, one-of-a-kind things that you can't find in some of the bigger stores," said Jackie Sauder, a Canton resident.
Although they can't always compete with the bargain sales of large chains, local shops say they do what they can to offer low prices.

"Merchants in every village around this county make an effort to keep their prices reasonable. We buy very carefully and that's where we sustain ourselves," said Marilyn Mintener, owner of The Pear Tree store in Canton.
The Canton Chamber of Commerce is playing an active role in getting people to shop locally. Each year, the organization raffles off gift certificates for stores in Canton that belong to the Chamber.
"They can spend them anywhere. They'll get a list of who's a chamber member, where they can spend them. You know, foods, drugs, they can go to the movies, restaurants," said Sally Hill, Executive Director of the Canton Chamber of Commerce.
And money spent at local shops is an investment in the community.
"You're helping your neighbors that own the stores and those people go to other stores and buy and you know, it’s just a cycle, but it keeps it right here," said Hill.
Merchants also say the convenience of shopping locally saves customers money in shipping costs and gas.
