Group works to rescue dogs

By: Web Staff

MANLIUS, N.Y. -- There's an ongoing effort to help neglected, abused and stray dogs from states like North Carolina, Alabama, and Tennessee. A few months ago a local group of volunteers created the Helping Hounds Dog Rescue to help give dogs a new leash on life.

The Dog Gone Inn Doggy Day Care in Manlius is one of the sites where the volunteers have been fostering some of the animals. Since January more than 160 dogs have been rescued and brought to Central New York. More volunteers are needed to help clean, walk and foster the dogs as they go up for adoption.

"We do it for the love of homeless animals everywhere. In this country five million dogs are euthanized every year and our goal is to save one, save two, save as many as we can," said volunteer Karen Kukla.

If you're looking to adopt a dog, or you're interested in volunteering you can call Leah at the Dog Gone Inn in Manlius at (315) 682-0783 for more information. You can also go to the Helping Hounds website at RescueHounds.com.
