Justice for Janet

By: Joleene Des Rosiers

NORTH SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Almost two years after her death, the case of 53-year-old Janet Ross still remains a mystery. Ross was found dead of blunt force trauma in her North Syracuse apartment in the fall of 2007. Today, her family is asking the public for help in solving that mystery.

"My mom was an amazing person who was loved practically by everyone that she ever knew," said Janet Ross' daughter, Jessica Meyer. "She was radiant and fun and full of life."

Janet Ross, 53, was a resident of North Syracuse for only six weeks when her life was cut short.

"Janet was discovered by her sister, who was coming over to check on her welfare," said North Syracuse Police Investigator Rocco DePerno. "They hadn't heard from her in a few days and when her sister came here, she saw her through the window, laying on the floor."

Her sister is Angelique Ross.

"Something hit me like a ton of bricks and I even said to myself, something bad has happened. And that's when I subsequently found her," Angelique Ross said.

Added DePerno, "Her face had bruises on her. We can't tell you the location of the bruises. She had some injuries. They would be conducive to a fall."

According to police and the family, the medical examiner labeled Janet's death a homicide due to blunt force trauma. That was in September of 2007. A joint investigation between the New York State Police and the North Syracuse Police Department was launched. But with little to go on, the case remains open. And for the police and the family still so many questions.

"So many different scenarios go through your mind that that's probably what the hardest is, is thinking about it and wondering," said Angelique Ross.

Meyers said, "We just ask that anyone who has information about that day, or who may know what happened to please come forward and share that information with the police."

"We'd like to know if she had the injuries before the incident here. If someone saw her maybe at the mall or in the area and she had a bruise on her face or on her arm, we'd like to know that," DePerno said.

This weekend, her family will head back to Dansville, near Rochester, to hold a benefit. Their goal is to raise $10,000. That cash will go to anyone that has any information that leads to an arrest and conviction.

In the meantime, they wait.

If you have any information or saw Janet Ross sometime on or before September 25th of 2007, her family and police urge you to come forward. All calls will be kept confidential. You can contact the North Syracuse Police Department at (315) 458-5670.
