Tree sculptor calls work "Wish To Fly"
ROME, N.Y. -- Last month we told you about Jim McDermid who began the task of sculpting a 15-foot maple at the Griffiss Business and Technology Park. Wednesday we checked back in and found out he is making progress, transforming this tree into a canvas with only a chainsaw.
McDermid is at Griffiss Business and Technology Park, a part of the Artist in Residence Program. His work centers around flight very appropriate on the former Air Force Base. You can already see a hand holding a paper airplane and birds. McDermid says the title of his work is "Wish to Fly."
"It's about a mixture of the human and the technology and the plane and the bird, but the sense of rising. For me it's rising up in the air to carve it. And It affects the process. It's very much about wish to fly," said McDermid.
