ALEXANDRIA BAY, N.Y. -- In late January the St. Lawrence River sits rather quiet, but of course during the summer season that all changes.
Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence have become popular spots for fishing and boating. That's why the New York Sea Grant has developed a group of websites designed to give you all sorts of information on the waterways. The newest one, glos.us, connects the various buoys in the system to give people real-time information about water conditions, such as temperature, wave heights, and wind direction.
"It's really an opportunity for a lot of the different folks who live, work and play along the lakes and rivers to get that real-time data." New York Sea Grant Recreation and Tourism Specialist Dave White said.
How much do you know about the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River? Well, we've got some answers for you. Brian Dwyer tells us about a new group of websites designed to give you all the information you need on the waterways.
Another site, coseegreatlakes.net is aimed at teachers and their students. It contains links to various news stories and pages and teaches teachers how to use that information in a curriculum or give students special projects.
"They can go online to anyone of those sites and get a lot of information about the Great Lakes including Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River right here in their backyard." White added.
Also part of the COSEE site, a chance for area teachers to take a week-long cruise on the St. Lawrence aboard the Lake Guardian Vessel from Chicago.
The cruise offers teachers various programs about how they can use the site in their classrooms and how they can develop projects and lessons based on the Great Lakes.
