CORNING, N.Y.--More veterans in Corning may soon receive a break on their taxes.
City leaders are considering giving Cold War veterans an exemption for up to 15 percent of their property value. That would match a break already in place for veterans of conflicts and wars.
The code committee discussed the additional exemption Friday. Members say Corning could have up to a couple hundred Cold War veterans. And the chair says it's right to recognize their service.
"Everyone served. If it happened to be your two years or four years that this nation was not at war or in time of conflict, you should be recognized for that as well," said Code Committee Chair James Nelson.

The Corning City Council is expected to vote next month on the veterans' exemption, and another measure to increase the income limits for senior citizen tax exemptions.
