CORNING, N.Y. -- Veterans who were in the military during the Cold War may soon be eligible for tax exemptions in the city of Corning.
City council members held a public hearing Tuesday to move one step closer to passing the proposal. Currently, troops serving in the War in Iraq and veterans who served during other war time periods are given certain tax exemptions, but veterans during the Cold War are not eligible. The Corning City Manager says it's an initiative likely to be passed.

"In general it's been very supported. It's an opportunity to reduce some of the burden for the Cold War veterans who served this country and there was positive feedback," said manager Mark Ryckman.
Council members will vote October 6th. If passed, the tax exemption will go into effect in 2009.
