ROME, N.Y. -- Students at Fort Stanwix School in Rome will attend a different school next year. The Board of Education has decided to close Fort Stanwix. If the district didn't consolidate it would risk losing state aid.
Based on where they live, Fort Stanwix students will either attend the Bellamy or Denti Elementary schools, and as part of this consolidation, the Clough School will be turned into a pre-k school. The superintendent says this plan will save the district almost $800,000.

"It's not a pleasant experience to have to close schools, the board of education in our eye don't want to have to do this. It is difficult for the community to accept the closing of schools that have served our students well for a long time. We have to do it for the future of the kids," said superintendent Jeffrey Simons.
Fort Stanwix will officially close in June. No teachers will be laid off under the current consolidation plan.
