Upset parents want Baldwinsville Superintendent out
Updated: 06/19/2008 06:54 AM
By: Katie Morse

BALDWINSVILLE -- At Monday night's meeting, the Baldwinsville School Board voted to move some of the district's administrators, even after many people spoke out against the changes.

Now upset parents are circulating a petition, and asking for the superintendent and school board president to be removed.

"To take a stand against the School Board like this, it's a very difficult one, but I feel that it needs to be done," said Betsy Evans, who authored the petition.

The petition also asks for an examination of the current board, and a formal code of conduct to be created.

"When you make things secretive or not public, unfortunately it leaves a bad taste in the mouths of parents when these are our children. This is why we're here," said Barbara Martinez, a concerned parent.

A petition circulating within the Baldwinsville School District asks for the superintendent and school board president to be removed. The parents behind the petition are upset about recent administrative restructuring within the district. Our Katie Morse spoke with them about their concerns

In a statement the district said, "All of the district's decisions are student-centered. Our main focus has always been and will always be to do what is best for our students and to continue to achieve academic excellence in our schools."

The parents we spoke with say this decision only reinforces their belief that they're not being listened to by the district. In fact, they say one of their biggest complaints throughout the year has been the lack of communication between the parents and the superintendent's office.

"I feel that I'm being heard, but not listened to," said Martinez.

"Most of the emails that got sent didn't even get responses back, phone calls didn't get responses back. We wanted to be heard that this is not acceptable in our school district," said Evans.

District officials said in a statement, "We value the messages that we heard and are committed to improving and enhancing communication processes at all levels. We are always open to residents' comments and concerns and will take all perspectives into consideration."

About 100 parents have signed the petition.

The school board also voted to move McNamara Elementary School principal Mary Shultz to Van Buren Elementary. Shultz has since taken a position at another school district. A hiring committee has been created to fill both positions.
