UTICA, N.Y. -- We're in the midst of college graduation season and graduates are on the hunt for their dream job. The senate education committee would like more opportunities for these graduates and others in the area.
"We've all identified, particularly in Upstate, the need to diversify to grow the economy to provide opportunities. We have a great university system, public and private. This is the chance to develop that partnership," said State Senator Joseph Griffo.
Although it is still a work in progress, the nano-tech site in Marcy that will be built near SUNY-IT is one example of how the committee would like similar partnerships between business and higher education around Central New York.
"That will create good paying jobs in this region and will lead to other companies locating in the area," said Senate Higher Education Committee Chairman Kenneth LaValle.
Members of the Senate Education Committee want college and business partnerships to expand. The committee held a hearing for educators, business and government leaders to discuss ways to foster economic development in the state.

The committee listened to a handful of testimony from the different groups represented. Job creation was a big part of the commentary. SUNY-IT Chancellor John Clark says job opportunities are just one part of economic development.
"Trying to create new industry for the area. Number two is economic workforce development, training employees in the new fields. That's two of our major areas that we concentrate on in the State University of New York," said SUNY-IT Chancellor John Clark.
Senator Griffo said the feedback will aid in formulating future education policies.
