HCCC students appear in court
There's some speculation the Reverend Al Sharpton may be lending his support to a case involving Herkimer County Community College students.
HERKIMER, N.Y. -- There's some speculation the Reverend Al Sharpton may be lending his support to a case involving Herkimer County Community College students.

Back in April, several students were involved in a fight on campus that left two students, Wayne Best and Mark Sniffen, with injuries to their heads, neck, back and face. Three students Basil Chambers, Brian Johnson and David Altman were arraigned Tuesday at Herkimer County Court.

All three suspects are black and some say race played a role in their arrests. The dean of students says that is not the case.

"This incident is unfortunate because it does involve students of color, race is part of the discussion, but as the dean it frustrates me because I feel that race relations on our campus are strong. They're interactive, they're meaningful. We don't have issues, we don't have problems on this campus," said Dean of Students Matthew Hawes.

The dean says Sharpton has not officially contacted the college.

A pretrial conference for the three is set for July 23rd. Calls made to their attorneys were not returned.
