UTICA, N.Y. -- Girls from across New York are in Utica getting a firsthand look at fire fighting. The Utica Fire Department, along with the Fire Service Women of New York State are hosting the girls, ages 14 to 19, for a week at the Phoenix Fire Camp.
The campers are from all over the state. Throughout the week, they will learn a number of skills including CPR, but most importantly, that this profession isn't just for the guys.

"They have an understanding what the world of a firefighter is and maybe some of them will get caught up in it and will aspire to be firefighters. They know that it's a profession that at one time was exclusively male. These women that are here on their own time volunteering are great role models," said Utica Fire Chief Russell Brooks.
The Phoenix Fire Camp started last year and is the first program of its kind in the northeast.
