CANTON , N.Y. -- This year the Potsdam Elk's Veteran's Day service was about more than honoring local veterans, it gave junior elks and army cadets a chance to interact with those who served our country.

"We're the future going into it and they're the past, so for us being able to interact, it's awesome," said Amanda Crosley, Senior Cadet at Clarkson University.

Veterans shared stories with their young visitors and were able to meet some of the people who are training to fill their shoes.

"You think the younger generation won't even know what World War II was about so, we appreciate it yes, it makes us feel good," said Robert Parmer, a Navy Veteran of World War II.

"I think they realize that the country really needs them now," said Ella Rodgers, a Marine Veteran of World War II.

The Potsdam Elks Club is doing its part to make sure our veterans are not forgotten on this holiday weekend. Our Kaitlyn Lionti has more on how the Elks honored local vets with a very special visit.
And the cadets took advantage of the opportunity to learn from the veterans'.

"I just talked to a marine, female marine from World War II and I mean, I learned something from her so that was a great experience," said Crosley.

The junior Elks say they were glad to have the chance to honor their local veterans and show their appreciation.

"Its just something we need to do to thank our veterans for being in the war, I mean this doesn't even compare to what they did for us," said Spencer Neaton, a junior Elk.

The veterans were grateful for the recognition and hope they made a lasting impression on their visitors.

"We served our country and hope that future generations will," said Parmer.

The Potsdam Elks honored the local veterans at United Helpers Nursing Home in Canton.
