Cats and dogs with light hair, a thin coat or pale skin need sun protection. Pink lips, noses and ears can burn just like human skin, so a little dab of pet-safe sun block on those areas to help prevent a sun burn.
Use waterproof sun block with an SPF of at least 30. Make sure it does not contain PABA or Zinc Oxide. These can be harmful to pets.

Massaging them before and after you apply the sunscreen makes the process easier and nice for both them and you. Try not to go out in the hot midday sun between noon and 2 p.m. Remember they are wearing a fur coat all year long, and the pavement is also very hot on their bare paws. Try getting up early or going out at dusk to enjoy a cool leisurely stroll.
If you can only walk your dog on a lunch hour, walk in a shady area and bring along lots of water for you and your pet.
