NEW YORK STATE -- A new poll finds New Yorkers support public financing of elections.

The Zogby poll released Monday shows New Yorkers of all political backgrounds overwhelmingly support public financing of elections for statewide and legislative offices even in tough times for the state budget.

The poll found that people think it will save taxpayers money because under the current system, special interests that make campaign contributions get tax breaks and favors that cost consumers.

A new poll finds New Yorkers support public financing of elections. The Zogby poll released Monday shows New Yorkers of all political backgrounds overwhelmingly support public financing of elections for statewide and legislative offices even in tough times for the state budget.
"The voters, they know what's going on and many of them vote by not voting. Their very cynical about the system, often with some very real justification so we need to restore faith in our democracy and this is one method we can do it," said Assemblyman Jack McEneny.

The poll also show that 74 percent of voters believe the Clean Elections Proposal would level the playing field so the average person can run for office and represent average voters rather than special interest.

The Assembly is expected to take up a public financing proposal before the close of the legislative session in June.
