It's been five and a half years since Jim Boeheim and Carmelo Anthony led Syracuse to a national title. That was pretty impressive, but coming into Sunday, the duo was looking to top that feat.
The U.S. men's basketball team was trying to win back the gold medal after failing miserably four years ago in Athens. All along the entire team said they would settle for nothing less than being on top, and back on top they are.
It wasn't easy though. The U.S. got somewhat of a scare from Spain after beating them handling in pool play, but they held on for a 118-107 win.
In all, five members of the US team scored in double digits led by Dwayne Wade's 27. Carmelo Anthony chipped in 13.
However, all summer long, this hasn't been about individual achievements. It's been about winning gold as a team and that is what they've done.
Now the U.S. gets to celebrate the three years of work they've put in since Jerry Colangelo started putting this team together.
Many players saying now that they'd be interested in playing again in the 2012 games in London.
