Wolken out of race for Congress

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The race for Congress in the 25th District may be down to just two candidates, one Democrat and one Republican. Another Republican has backed out of the contest and has thrown his support to former State Fair director Peter Cappuccilli.

The head of the Manufacturers Association of Central New York, Randy Wolken, said he had significant encouragement to run, but feared an intra-party battle for the nomination might be counter-productive. Wolken said it is vital to unify behind a single candidate for the fall election to insure the Party holds the seat being vacated by James Walsh. A primary, he claims, would have aided the Democratic effort to gain the Congressional post.

The likely Democratic contender is Dan Maffei who lost a race against James Walsh in 2006.
