CAZENOVIA, N.Y. -- Officials at Cazenovia College say a security workshop taking place there on Wednesday morning was actually designed by West Virginia University and developed for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
About 30 campus executives from colleges across the state will meet to learn the basics of security planning. An instructor from West Virginia will be presenting ways on how to raise awareness of potential threats and provide resources and planning tools.
Cazenovia Public Safety Director Thomas Engelmann says in the wake of the tragedy at Virginia Tech University last year, every campus needs to be prepared no matter what size the campus is. From terrorism to weather related situations, he says you can never be too prepared.
A nationally acclaimed homeland security workshop is taking center stage in Central New York. On Wednesday morning Cazenovia College will host a homeland security planning conference for campus executives. Our Brad Vivacqua has more.
"It's important to know how we can protect our students and staff in any type of situation. Basically what this is about is planning for all hazards that are a possibility of occurring on campus," Engelmann said.
Some of the participants coming to today's workshop include Syracuse University, Le Moyne and several SUNY representatives.
Engelmann says it's the first time the workshop will take place in New York State, but it's likely it will soon make its way to other campuses.
