CLAY, N.Y. -- The fate of the Clay Police Department now lies in the voters' hands.
Onondaga County Legislators unanimously approved the 2008 budget Tuesday, accepting the transfer of police functions from the Town of Clay to the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office. The final say, however, belongs to the Town of Clay taxpayers. They can approve or abolish the dissolution of the department.

If approved, the Sheriff's Office would take over patrolling the town. Town of Clay Supervisor Jim Rowley says none of the full-time officers will lose their jobs.
"There's 13 positions that are required under the contract. We have 16 full-time officers and the three that aren't part of the contract will be absorbed into other positions that are currently open within the county," Rowley said.
The public vote is scheduled for June 23rd.
