ELMIRA, N.Y. -- What you can't tell from their cheers and smiles is that these guys are four days into a five day bike trip. What you can tell is that they're good, old friends.
"This is a wonderful opportunity to do something with each other. And we're in pretty good condition, so, you put the combination together and we're taking a heck of a trip," said Russ Fahey.
The five men are biking from the Philadelphia area to Alfred for four in the group's 50th class reunion at Alfred University.
"What we planned on riding is 487 miles. The total distance we're covering is more than 325," said Stuart Duff.
"We wanted to do this for fun, to see if we could. You know, can an old timer do that?" said Elliott Lasky.
The guys, who range in age from 70 to 86, have learned they can, but they say there have been some challenges.
"The first two days we fried. It was very, very hot," Fahey said.
A group of men is celebrating a major milestone by covering a lot of miles. The five men are biking more than 300 miles to attend a 50th reunion at Alfred University. Our Kat De Maria caught up with the men as they passed through Elmira.
"If you recall, the temperature was somewhere near 100 degrees. So it was very difficult," Lasky said.
"The heat doesn't bother me too much. The hills bother me a little bit," Andy Seaman said.
"There are some mystery hills, too,” Fahey said. “Those ones are the killers."
"The hills are twice as bad as they used to be," joked Duff.
Still, the guys say they're enjoying the trip and using it and the reunion to take a walk, or rather a ride, down memory lane.
“It means getting together with friends and remembering what it was like to be young again all over again," said Fahey.
"It brings us back to the time we spent together and the adventures we would take," Roger Eiss said.
The guys say the bike trip is their latest adventure.
"Every time something good happens, we say the adventure continues,” Lasky said. “Every time something bad happens, we say the adventure continues.”
"This is a true adventure,” Fahey added. “We expect we'll try to do it again on our 60th college reunion!”
Surely with more smiles and cheers.
The group is expected to arrive in Alfred on Friday in time for the Reunion Parade down Main Street.
