CLAY, N.Y. -- The Town of Clay supervisor and members of the Clay Police Department are throwing their support behind a plan to merge the department with the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department.

The Town of Clay supervisor James Rowley said merging the departments would result in a tax cut of $1.3 million. And he said the merger would make the police department more efficient and increase patrols in the towns.

Clay town police officers would transfer to the sheriff's office keeping their current ranks. The officers in favor of the plan say merging would provide them more room to grow and increased benefits.
