Road Rage 101

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- "Well, I have experienced road rage, actually. It almost seems like I used to be one of the people that used to be a part of road rage or something," said Driver Jerome Omar Sharif Junior.


Sharif says he used to be a frustrated driver.


"It was never anything significant, more like yelling or screaming in my car or hitting the dash board or something like that. But, its all about learning how to deal with things and being more patient with people," said Sharif.


Sharif has learned how to deal with his road rage and the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office is hoping others will too.


"Most recently, we've seen these road rage incidents escalate to one vehicle try and hit the other and violent acts such as fights or stabbings or slashings," said Onondaga County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Richard McCarron


Sergeant McCarron says you should never aggressively honk your horn at another driver and you should never get out of your car."


"Your response could really make that situation a lot worse than it is," said McCarron.


Road Rage 101
Road rage is blamed for two violent assaults in Onondaga County in the last couple weeks. Our Giselle Phelps spoke with some experts to find out what drivers should do if they find themselves under attack.
Sergeant McCarron says there are simples things drivers can do to avoid confrontation.



"If the person is being very aggressive towards you, we recommend just slow down move over and let them go by you. We don't recommend that you escalate the situation by yelling back or doing an inappropriate gesture to them," said McCarron.


McCarron also says drivers should seek out a safe location like a gas or police station if you think you're being followed. And, he says you should never go straight home, because an aggressive driver
