ITHACA, N.Y. -- People in the Town of Ithaca can now put windmills on their property as long as they're not too loud.

The Ithaca Town board passed a law Monday night allowing people to put small wind facilities on their land as long as they don't exceed a maximum of 55 decibels of noise. The law was considered at previous meetings.

Some residents say passing the law is a step forward to allowing wind energy in Ithaca.

"It's great to be this far along to allow alternate energy sources in the Town of Ithaca," said Bruce Brittain, Town of Ithaca resident.

Brittain said he thinks keeping the noise level at 55 decibels or lower was an important aspect of the law, ensuring wind energy devices don't turn quiet neighborhoods into noisy ones.
