MANLIUS, N.Y. -- Ask any parent and they'll tell you there's nothing more important than keeping their children safe. That’s why many people are applauding new legislation passed by the president that keeps lead out of toys. Under the new legislation manufacturers will have to ensure that toys are lead free.
Due to a high amount of toy recalls many retailers have made efforts to only sell lead free products in recent months. That includes a store in Manlius. Toy store owner Tim Gilchrist said his store is careful when selecting toys from manufacturers and he even tests the toys himself to ensure they are safe for children.
A bill signed by President Bush last week is putting new standards on the children's toy industry. The legislation bans lead from all children's toys and is having an effect both locally and across the country. News 10 Now's Brad Vivacqua has more on this.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates there are about 28,000 deaths in the United States each year from unsafe products including toys. It’s hoped this legislation will help bring that number down.
