DERUYTER, N.Y. -- A case of MRSA has been reported in Madison County. A student at DeRuyter Central School was diagnosed with the bacterial disease and is now being treated with antibiotics.

The school has disinfected all areas the student came in contact with and is monitoring the situation with both the Madison and Cortland County Health Departments.

MRSA is a type of staph infection mainly found in hospitals, but it made headlines last year after a number of students in both Central New York and the Southern Tier picked up the bacteria.
