State budget could affect SUNY tuition

MARCY, N.Y. -- Governor Paterson's state budget plan could also result in an increase in student tuition at State University of New York colleges. Nearly 3,000 students attend SUNY IT in Marcy.

The governor's proposal would call for a 13.6 percent increase in tuition rates, translating to about $550 more for instate students, beginning with the spring semester. State legislators will vote on the budget Tuesday evening, but no matter what the vote is, there is no guarantee as to what the final tuition rates could be.

State budget could affect SUNY tuition
On Tuesday state legislators will vote on Governor Paterson's proposed budget, but budget cuts could also result in tuition increases at State University of New York colleges.
"Although the Governor recommends a tuition increase, he does not set New York State tuition, it's the SUNY Board of Trustees. So we actually have to look for both the vote of the legislature and that proposal approved or not and look to see what the SUNY board will do with that," said SUNYIT director of admissions, Jennifer Ninh.

Prior to Governor Paterson's budget proposal, SUNY presidents had proposed a 25 percent tuition increase.
