It’s a Mother’s Day in Washington, D.C. with a lot of meaning for some mothers here at this memorial. Written on these marble walls are the names of nearly 18,000 sons and daughters.
“It’s a great tribute to him,“ Jean Sperr said.
For Jean and Andrew Sperr it is emotional as they remember AJ, killed in the line of duty last March.
This is an experience they wanted the whole family to have and Andrew Sperr was surprised to find out how many other families are going through the same things.
Kathy Corr said it is hard to even remember that today was Mother’s Day. She came to D.C. with her husband, parents and children to honor her son, Joseph. He was gunned down by a robber outside Utica. They say being here with other survivor families help them heal.
Police officers killed in the line of Duty from across the country are being memorialized in the nation's capital. Included in the names etched on this years wall are Trooper Andrew Sperr and Officer Joseph Corr.
“It’s a great common ground, because you all can relate to each other. It’s difficult, but it’s good to talk to one another,” David Corr said.
Thousands of families have been coming to this spot to remember their loves ones since the memorial first went up in 1991.
It is a place where New York State Trooper George DelNagro wanted his children to see.
“With all the tragic losses we as an agency have seen over the last couple of years, I felt it would be appropriate for me to come this time,” DelNagro said.
