Murphy benefits from Biden visit

By: Curtis Schick

CAPITAL REGION -- "He promised me two months ago, he promised me that he would come in 2009," said Saratoga County Democratic Chair Larry Bullman.

Bullman said Vice President Joe Biden is keeping his promise. He just didn't think it would happen two months later.

Vice President Biden will talk about the stimulus package Thursday at Shenendehowa High School in Clifton Park, which also just happens to be in freshman Congressman Scott Murphy's district.

"Scott has been working on the vice president since he was sworn in to advocate to get him up here in the 20th district," said Bullman.

"I have been talking to the White House and the vice president's office on how to make sure the program is impactful and it does what we want in the 20th district," said Rep. Scott Murphy.

Insiders said it is a big win for Murphy, who is up for reelection in 2010. They said it's a chance for newcomers to showcase economic progress in his district.

The administration is a big supporter of high-tech projects, like the massive GLOBALFOUNDRIES chip plant. It may not be getting stimulus money, but it will create thousands of jobs. As for the stimulus money the district is getting, Thursday's host says it's not coming fast enough.

"It is has been a slower process than any of us would like and we want to be sure that the White House and the vice president knows that they have to do everything that they can to cut the bureaucratic red tape," said Murphy.

Murphy said he plans to "bend the vice president's ear" about it Thursday, and, if he shows he can get money flowing faster, it can only benefit him come election time.
